A relaxed family portrait is one of the most rewarding photos you can own — and one of the trickiest to plan when young children are involved. The secret is to stop trying to make kids behave like small adults and instead design a session that works with their energy. Here is how we approach family shoots at Studio X.
Book your session for when your children are usually at their happiest — often mid-morning, after breakfast and a good sleep, and well before nap or meal times. A tired or hungry toddler will always win the battle, so plan around them and everything else gets easier.
Pick a palette of two or three colours and let everyone wear a variation rather than identical outfits — it looks natural and intentional. Make sure children are comfortable; scratchy collars and stiff shoes lead to grumpy faces. Our wardrobe guide has more on choosing colours that photograph well.
The stiff, everyone-look-here shot is worth getting once — then let it go. The images families treasure most are usually the in-between moments: a parent whispering, a toddler giggling, a genuine cuddle. We build in time for play precisely because that is where the magic happens.
A favourite toy, a comfort blanket or a small snack can rescue a wobbly moment. If you have a very young baby, bring spare clothes and all the usual essentials — we never rush a family with little ones.
Children sense stress. If parents are calm and treating the shoot as fun, the photos show it. Our job is to keep the mood light and capture your family as it really is — warm, a little chaotic, and full of love.
