A Guide to Maternity Photoshoots: Timing, Outfits and Poses

8 August 20266 min read

Pregnancy is a short, remarkable season, and a maternity shoot is a way to hold on to how it felt — the anticipation, the bond, the shape of the bump. Whether you want soft and elegant or bold and joyful, a little planning helps you feel comfortable and look your best. Here is how we approach maternity sessions at Studio X.

The best time to book

For most people the sweet spot is between 30 and 36 weeks. By then the bump is beautifully round and unmistakable, but you are usually still comfortable enough to move and pose. If you are expecting twins or carrying larger, consider booking a couple of weeks earlier, since the later weeks can be more tiring. Morning sessions often work well, before the day's swelling and fatigue set in.

What to wear

Clothes that skim and define the bump beat anything loose and flowing that hides it. Form-fitting dresses, a simple bodycon, or a bump-and-bra combination all photograph wonderfully. Long, flowing gowns add drama and movement. Many clients bring two or three options — one fitted, one flowing, and perhaps something personal. Solid colours keep the focus on you; jewel tones and soft neutrals both work well against studio backdrops.

Posing to flatter the bump

A few simple habits make a big difference. Turn slightly to the side so the bump reads clearly in profile. Rest your hands on the top and underside of the bump to frame it — a gesture that also looks tender and natural. Keep a small gap between your arms and body to define your waist. We direct all of this on the day, so you never have to guess. If being on camera feels awkward, our guide to relaxing in front of the lens is a good read beforehand.

Include your partner and children

Some of the warmest maternity images include the people who will share this journey — a partner's hands over yours, or an older child leaning in to “listen” to the bump. Bring them along for part of the session if you would like these. They add story and emotion to the set.

Little comforts

Stay hydrated, eat beforehand, and tell us the moment you need a break — pregnancy and long poses do not mix, so we work in short, comfortable bursts. Simple, natural make-up and hair keep the focus on you rather than a look that will date.
