Prints vs Digital: How to Get the Most From Your Photos

You have had the shoot, you have the photos — now comes the part almost everyone gets wrong. A folder of files sitting on one phone is a surprisingly fragile place for your memories. A phone can be lost, stolen, dropped in water or simply die, and the photos go with it. Getting the most from your photographs is really about two things: keeping the digital files safe, and bringing the best of them into the physical world.

Back up in more than one place

The simple rule photographers live by is to keep your important files in at least two places, one of them not in your home. In practice that means: keep the originals on your phone or computer, and also upload them to a cloud service (Google Photos, iCloud or Google Drive), or copy them to an external hard drive or a second device. If one is lost, the other survives. Do this soon after you receive your gallery, not “someday” — someday is when files disappear.

Keep the high-resolution originals

When you share a photo on WhatsApp or Instagram, the app compresses it to a smaller, lower- quality version. That is fine for sharing, but it is not the file to print from. Always keep the original, full-resolution images we deliver, safely backed up. If you only ever hold on to the WhatsApp copies, you will be disappointed when you later try to print them large.

Why prints still matter

Digital files are convenient, but they mostly live unseen inside a device. A printed photo on a wall, in an album or as a gift is something you actually experience every day — and it does not depend on a battery, a password or a platform still existing in ten years. There is good reason the most cherished photos in most homes are the printed ones. A print you can hold is the most durable backup of all.

Print well, not just cheaply

• Use the full-resolution files, not compressed social-media versions, so prints stay sharp.
• For anything large or important, a professional lab beats a rushed high-street print.
• Consider an album for a whole event — it tells the story far better than scattered frames.
• Keep framed prints out of direct sunlight, which fades them over the years.
